We had borrowed furniture, the bare essentials, and not much of a mattress. It was not the obvious setting for a personal technology revolution. I did not believe it was magic. I still do not. A probabilistic system that can generate convincing nonsense at machine speed is not something I intend to approach with spiritual wonder. It belongs inside boundaries, with evidence, controls, inspection, and a clear understanding that fluent output is not the same thing as truth. But skepticism is not the same thing as refusal. Refusal would have been easier. You can preserve a reputation for discernment indefinitely by standing far enough away from anything new. I kept working with it. ## Feeling early again AI did not give me my ideas. It did not give me technical judgment, curiosity, or decades of experience finding faults in systems that supposedly could not fail. What it changed was the distance between an idea and something I could inspect. I could prototype. I could work through code with assistance. I could test architectural ideas, shape interfaces, construct workflows, and turn rough thoughts into artifacts quickly enough to determine whether they deserved to live. The distance began to collapse. That got my attention. Not because AI was shiny. Shiny wears off. It got my attention because it made old ideas newly reachable. By this point in a career, people naturally begin doing the math. Sixty-two. Sixty-five. Sixty-seven. You consider the glide path. You wonder when it will be time to hang it up from corporate life and whether whatever comes next will engage the same part of you that was once lit up by radios, computers, networks, and all the strange machinery that carried you this far. I had started asking those questions. Then something unexpected happened. I felt early again. Not young. That would be a different claim, and my knees could probably provide rebuttal evidence. Early.
