Cognitive Capital Tony Malott · Published 2026-09-04 https://shareplane.malott.ai/artifacts/cognitive-capital/ Skip to content Shareplane doctrine series · Volume 01 Cognitive Capital The economics of machine cognition. Machine cognition becomes organizational capital when validated reasoning is converted into persistent, reusable assets that preserve or increase capability while reducing future uncertainty, cost, risk, or marginal cognition. Tony Malott September 4, 2026 Shareplane 01 · Governing thesis The token disappears. The asset remains. The meter sees consumption. The organization may receive something that keeps working after the model call ends. Some inference is consumed and disappears with the session. Other inference leaves behind architecture, code, tests, requirements, evidence, security findings, semantic models, automation, migration plans, governed context, and other reusable assets. The economically meaningful question is therefore not merely how much inference was consumed. It is what durable capability was created, what future cognition was retired, what risk was reduced, and who can produce that return safely. The AI-native enterprise should manage frontier cognition as a portfolio of investments, not merely as a portfolio of software licenses. 02 · Canonical transformation Reasoning becomes capital only when something useful survives it. Purchased Inference → Directed Cognition → Artifact → Evidence + Judgment → Validated Asset → Persistent Context → Reuse → Lower Future Marginal Cognition → Compounding Capability Four control planes act on the transformation: the operator, the runtime, governance, and judgment or taste. None of them can be hand-waved away without changing the economics. 03 · Four arguments One doctrine. Four distinct questions. Chapter 01 Inference as Capital Formation The token disappears. The asset remains. Chapter 02 The Most Expensive Token Is the One You Refuse to Spend Cost control can preserve larger liabilities. Chapter 03 Same Tokens. Different Returns. Operator quality changes the yield. Chapter 04 Cognitive Capital Allocation Allocate cognition like capability, not office software. 04 · Projector One semantic core. Three visual expressions. The projector is part of the proof. The meaning is governed. The expression is allowed to change. A · The Ledger Editorial, institutional, enduring. B · In Motion Transformational, dynamic, forward. C · The Field Systems, allocation, earned autonomy. 05 · Hard distinctions What this doctrine refuses to confuse. 01 Tokens ≠ value. 02 Output ≠ asset. 03 Model ≠ runtime. 04 Access ≠ autonomy. 05 High consumption ≠ waste. 06 Low consumption ≠ efficiency. 07 Automation ≠ authority. 08 Economic capital formation ≠ automatic accounting capitalization. 06 · Corpus continuity This Work is part of a larger argument.
